What’s the Buzz?
This little gem is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Its website doesn’t do the property justice. The sumptuous, almost dramatic living spaces, with Gothic windows, quirky chandeliers, huge paintings and an open fire are a feast for the eyes and a delight to sit in. This is the kind of unique setting an independent family-run hotel can offer – there is nothing homogeneous about it, and it’s immediately clear that everything is chosen with love and care.
Overlooking Carmarthen Bay and Caldey Island in the distance, the 18th-century building sits just outside the popular seaside town of Tenby
in Pembrokeshire. The much-loved property is owned and run by Lucas and Melanie Boissevain, along with two of their three children, Saskia and Jacques, and the personal touch and warm welcome is something other hotels will always seek to replicate.

It also offers five acres of beautiful gardens and woodlands, which feature the ruins of an ancient Norman chapel, and many peaceful spots where you can sit or walk and soak up the serenity that the natural world provides.
The food in its restaurant is also stunning, and if you can stretch to it, book the tasting menu – it’s fantastic!
In recognition of its excellence, Penally Abbey was awarded the title of Best Hotel in Wales by the Good Hotel Guide in 2022 and also named Hotel of the Year for Wales at the AA Hospitality Awards in 2023.
What Are the Rooms Like?
The hotel offers 12 individually designed rooms that exude luxury and comfort. There are king and superking-size beds, with crisp white linens, and en-suite marble bathrooms with walk-in rainfall showers or deep bathtubs. All rooms have espresso machines and plush bathrobes, complimentary wifi, and daily housekeeping services. Options range from cosy doubles to huge, spacious suites.

Best Sea View?
For sea views, consider Room 6, the Large Double Seafront, which boasts floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the coast extending to the Gower Peninsula. Alternatively, Room 5, the Superior Double, offers views of Carmarthen Bay and Caldey Island.
How About the Food?
Dining at the on-site Rhosyn Restaurant is a highlight. If you are staying here, book a table in advance, as it can get busy, even on weekdays. Under the guidance of head chef Josh Hughes, the restaurant serves a divine tasting menu, featuring dishes carefully crafted using seasonal ingredients sourced in Pembrokeshire. Guests can enjoy options such as venison with beetroot, pickled walnuts and blackberries, or monkfish served with pumpkin, black garlic and chicken sauce. The restaurant’s unique decor, complemented by Gothic windows looking out onto the extensive gardens, makes for an unforgettable dining experience. This is a fabulous location for a special celebration or treat.

Any Luxurious Touches?
The whole hotel feels luxurious, with the softest bathrobes, beautiful paintings, mouthwatering food and plush cushions, mattresses and seating everywhere. It was like being enveloped in a big, fluffy marshmallow.
What Will It Cost?
Rooms start from £210 per night for a double, including breakfast. Dining options at the Rhosyn Restaurant feature main courses starting from £25, with the tasting menu available from £90 per person.
