Madeleine Barber stays at The Metropole, which overlooks Padstow's bustling harbour

WHAT’S THE BUZZ?
Built in 1904 when the railways were extended into Cornwall, The Metropole dominates the cliff-face above Padstow. It’s a short stroll to the harbour, where guests have plenty of art galleries, craft shops and cafés to explore.

WHAT ARE THE ROOMS LIKE?
With period features and antique furniture, the bedrooms are packed with character. They’re classily furnished, with just the right amount
of traditional décor.

ANY LUXURIOUS TOUCHES?
Think sparkling English wine, sweet treats on arrival and fragrant bathroom essentials. The hotel also has a heated outdoor pool and offers spa treatments.

BEST SEA VIEW?
From the brasserie, where diners watch seagulls flying in the sky above a panoramic backdrop of the Camel Estuary and Rock village.

HOW ABOUT THE FOOD?
The Metropole’s restaurant has been awarded two AA Rosettes, and deservedly so. After a pea and mint amuse bouche we tried starters of Cornish crab with avocado, grapefruit and chilli, and pan-fried fillet of mackerel with beetroot, horseradish and capers before moving on to a meaty main. The butter poached pheasant breast with Parmesan polenta, wilted greens, mushrooms and jus gras was divine, as was the locally sourced fillet of beef with fondant potatoes, tomato confit, fennel, samphire and truffle jus.

WHAT WILL IT COST?
A standard double room starts from £99 per night, including breakfast.
