Coast Editor Alex Fisher eats at The Chimney House in Brighton, Sussex

WHET MY APPETITE
This venue really lives up to the title gastro pub, with fish from neighbouring Newhaven, fruit and veg from local farms and glasshouses, and meat from nearby Garlic Wood Farm.  Much more experimental and advanced than your average pub, they offer the likes of pickled mussels with pink firs, shallots and parsley as a starter and mutton loin with oysters, salsify, wild cabbage and elderberry capers for a main.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
We highly recommend the vegetarian tasting plate as a shared starter or main. It looks beautiful, tastes delicious, and features turnip and malt, cottage cheese, carrot cooked in whey, pickles, woodruff gel, cauliflower fritter, sour cream with garlic capers, and sourdough bread. Desserts include prune frangipane tart or artisan British cheeses.

HOW’S THE MOOD?
Furnished with vintage finds, this pub has oodles of character. A great place to come with a big group of friends for a birthday celebration.

CAN I SEE THE SEA?
No. In walking distance from trendy Seven Dials, this venue is away from the hustle and bustle of Brighton city centre and coastline.

WHAT’S THE DAMAGE?
Starters cost around £5, mains begin at £11 and desserts £6. They also offer a buffet menu for parties from £8.50.
