After this summer’s tragic events, Camber Sands’ local community is campaigning to raise funds for stationing an RNLI lifeguard on the beach during 2017. Words: Madeleine Barber

This summer the nation’s hearts broke as five young men drowned while swimming in the sea at Camber Sands. Now, the local community is taking action to raise funds for stationing a lifeguard on the sandy beach.

The Gallivant, a stylish restaurant nestled behind Camber’s sand dunes, is hosting a Fish Supper on Sunday 16 October. The event will donate all its proceeds to the RNLI, who are dedicated to saving lives at sea around the British and Irish coast. There are 200 beaches in the UK that post an RNLI lifeguard on their shores during the summer months, but unfortunately Camber Sands is not one of them. The Gallivant wants to change this.

The two-course RNLI Fish Supper will take place in their Beach Hut Marquee from 6pm. Guests will enjoy a signature Gallivant Bouillabaisse followed by a dessert of sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream. Diners are encouraged to bring a bottle and make a donation for their drink. All funds raised will help to influence local authorities in the decision to provide vital funding for stationing an RNLI lifeguard at Camber for summer 2017.

Tickets cost £15. To reserve a space, call 01797 225 057, visit thegallivant.co.uk or email [email protected].
