Alex Fisher eats at The Oyster Shack in Bigbury, South Devon

WHET MY APPETITE The venue began life as a shed, which housed oyster purification tanks. Oyster lovers would visit, buy their lunch and pitch up a deckchair on the surrounding grass with a bottle of wine, and gradually the restaurant evolved.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU? Commended in the Michelin Guide, The Oyster Shack is known for serving the best local seafood. Oysters are still the favourite starter, complemented by Salcombe crab and lobster with your choice of flavouring. Catch of the day includes fillet of sole with crab risotto and parsley oil.

HOW’S THE MOOD? It’s a proper family venue, where children are welcomed and regulars may be found waltzing around the tables after an anniversary celebration.

CAN I SEE THE SEA? Not from the restaurant, but the stretches of sand at Bigbury and Burgh Island are a five-minute drive away.

WHAT'S THE DAMAGE? Six oysters are £15 and a bowl of mussels is £12.50. Desserts such as affogato, local cheeses or ice cream start at £4.50.

OPENING TIMES Open every day from 12 to 3pm, then 6 to 9pm Monday to Saturday.
