Alex Fisher eats at 64 Degrees, Brighton

WHET MY APPETITE
This cool little diner in the Lanes threw down the gauntlet to the rest of Brighton’s restaurants to step up and keep up when it opened just a few years ago. Always busy, the slick, industrial-looking interior sits well with its modern approach to food. In 2014 and 2015 it was awarded a Bib Gourmand by Michelin and was named Best Restaurant at the Brighton & Hove Food Awards. It was also voted 16th in the National Restaurant Top 100 list 2016.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
Unique and inventive small plates of food that can be mixed, matched and shared. Offered under the banner of Fish, Meat or Veg rather than starters and mains, it’s a great way to experiment with new flavours and tastes. We loved the fresh taste of the squid, chermoula and fennel dish, and the kalettes with black bean and egg yolk were divine. The dessert of pineapple, mint and coconut was my personal favourite. The menu is constantly changing, but always makes use of the best local produce.

HOW’S THE MOOD?
Relaxed, hipster hang-out in the centre of buzzing Brighton.

WHAT’S THE DAMAGE?
Dishes range from around £7 to £14. Desserts cost from £7, with petit fours priced at £4.
